Texas Baptist Historical Society

If you are interested in preserving the history of Texas Baptists, then you should be a member of the Texas Baptist Historical Society.

Membership

Membership in the Texas Baptist Historical Society is open to all interested individuals, churches, and institutions.

Benefits

Members receive a subscription to Texas Baptist History: The Journal of The Texas Baptist Historical Society which is published annually and two newsletters throughout the year. Back issues of the Journal are available for purchase. You may request a list of the available back issues from the Society’s Secretary/Treasurer.

As a member you can also participate in informative annual meetings of the Society held in conjunction with the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Texas State Historical Association.

History

The Texas Baptist Historical Society was formed in 1938 after the Executive Board had established the Texas Baptist Historical Collection in 1933. After a period of initial activity, the Society functioned only intermittently for many years. In 1977, the Texas Baptist Historical Committee, appointed by the Baptist General Convention of Texas and operating under the Convention’s Executive Board, took action to reorganize this Society with a revised constitution and a structure that makes it an auxiliary to the Texas Baptist Historical Committee.

Mission

  • Promote the value, preservation, and education of Texas Baptist heritage through a journal featuring articles and book reviews.
  • Sponsor annual meetings that include opportunities for workshops, dialogue, and features of historical interest.
  • Encourage and work with local churches to collect, preserve, microfilm, write, and observe their own history.
  • Support the research, writing, and teaching of Texas Baptist history.
