Purpose StatementThe purpose of the Mary Hill Davis Scholarship program is to provide support and encouragement to those Texas Baptist ethnic/minority students who will serve as future lay or vocational ministry leaders in Texas Baptist ethnic/minority churches.* The scholarship program is designed to assist students pursuing a Bachelors Degree; it is not the purpose of this program to support applicants pursuing graduate degrees or enrolled in non-degree programs. Each applicant must show evidence of being actively engaged in his/her respective ethnic/minority community. It is essential that the applicant be a member of a Texas Baptist Church affiliated and participating with the Baptist General Convention of Texas that is representative of his/her ethnic/minority heritage. Applicants must attend one of the nine Texas Baptist Universities affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.** The scholarship is awarded for a maximum of eight (8) continuous full-term semesters. Summer terms or mini-terms are not funded by this program. - Full-time students enrolled for 11 or more hours will receive $800 per semester.
- Part-time students enrolled in at least 6 hours will receive $400 per semester.
Application ProcessAll applications must have pastor recommendation, current transcript, and/or college enrollment verification and be received in our office by April 15 of each year for scholarships beginning in the fall or spring of the following year. Only fully completed applications will be considered for selection. Applicants must have resided in Texas for at least 12 months immediately prior to applying and must be citizens or legal guests/residents of the United States. A High School Diploma and complete transcripts of all accredited college credit are required for an application to be considered. A GED will also qualify a student for consideration. Each applicant must provide a letter of recommendation from the pastor of his/her church. If at all possible this letter should be submitted on church stationery and must contain the church’s name and physical address as well as current contact information for the pastor. The letter should be written to affirm the membership and participation of the applicant, including the length of time the applicant has been a member of the church. An applicant must have maintained a ‘B’ average in high school or a minimum of 2.00 GPA on all undergraduate work. A minimum GPA of 2.00 must be maintained during the duration of the scholarship. Once the application is submitted to the Mary Hill Davis Scholarship office the application will then be submitted to the respective ethnic/minority office within the BGCT. These offices will determine the scholarship recipients for their respective constituencies. Applicants should be notified by May 15th in regard to whether or not they receive the scholarship. REMINDER: Completed applications must be received by the Mary Hill Davis Scholarship Office not later than April 15th Sustaining the ScholarshipEach semester the Mary Hill Davis Scholarship Office must receive current enrollment verification or transcript before scholarship funds will be disbursed on behalf of a student for that given semester. These documents must be submitted to the scholarship office by September 20th for the fall semester and January 20th for the spring semester in order to receive scholarship funds for the respective semester. An applicant who drops out of school for one semester or longer without notifying the Mary Hill Davis Scholarship Office will be considered non-active. The scholarship will be discontinued and the student will remain on non-active status until the student reapplies. *Ethnic/Minority groups mentioned in this document refer to non-Anglo persons of African-American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, or other intercultural heritage.
