The signs on the windows of Sonterra Fellowship’s building call people to “a place to belong.” For McKenzie Brown, the church is living up to that billing. In Sonterra, Brown has found people who care for each other. They pray for each other and offer a helping hand when needed. Read more...

The first time Arthur Craig, pastor of Woodhaven Baptist Deaf Church, met Donald Payne, he asked him to help minister to deaf prisoners. Payne wanted no part of it. He had professed Christ as Lord of his life, but had moved away from living out his faith. He didn’t think he could minister to inmates because he didn’t have his life completely together. Rock music blares over thousands of college students gathered on the beach. The crowd cheers as a tug-of-war contest takes place. Alcohol flows here as smoothly as the ocean rolls onto the sand. In the midst of it all, a young man who came looking to party finds Christ thanks in part to the help of a Texas Baptist college student. Urging ministers to retool their thinking about reaching others for Christ so they may retool the lives of church members and nonbelievers more effectively, Baptist pastor Charles Booth delivered the keynote speech at the African American Leadership Workshop March 9-10 at the George W. Truett Theological Seminary. Quoting scripture, poetry and a scientist, Booth urged ministers at the 3rd annual conference sponsored by Baptist General Convention of Texas, to propagate by changing themselves. Read more...

As he heard all of his high school activities read to the congregation, he knew which way he was going. His father is a worship leader, and Sanchez grew up loving music. Each week Bryan Simpson leads a Bible study at Mitchell College in New London, Conn. At first, it was he and another person. Then someone else joined him. A third person has said he will start coming, but hasn’t shown up yet. And it doesn’t matter to Simpson. He wants people to hear the gospel and study the Bible, but he’s not focused numbers. He’s more concerned about discipling college students who have little knowledge of the Christian faith, helping them mature spiritually. Read more...

Battered and bruised, some Baptist youth ministers are at a crossroads as they try to please pastors, parents and God. Seeking refuge from the storm, they could find hope in God’s word and in an unlikely phenomenon - a hurricane. Hurricanes are nothing new to Allen Jackson who teaches youth education at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. TEL PASO – Continued heavy rains have flooded El Paso homes again, forcing Texas Baptist Men mud-out teams to revisit some of the houses they already cleaned. After briefly looking like the floodwaters from an unusually heavy monsoon season would recede, another round of heavy storms hit El Paso again and flooded some of the same areas that were previously swamped. When the summer sun sets each Friday in South Texas, the bright lights come on and the crowds gather, cheering every throw of a rope and buck of a bull at a local rodeo. Many of the participants and onlookers have been going to rodeos for years, honing their skills or learning the finer points of the sport. Lloyd is one of a multitude of homeowners who were helped by more than 200 Texas Baptist students from 11 college campuses who stripped homes down to their studs March 13-17. The Texans were part of the more than 1,000 college students who served in New Orleans under the direction of the Southern Baptist Convention North American Mission Board and New Orleans Baptist churches this spring break.
